Negombo fish market which is also known as “Lellama” is highlighted as the largest fishing market in Sri Lanka. It is situated just 5 KM off the Negombo city by the lagoon. Best to visit 4.00 AM – 5.30 AM to catch the busy market and the activities. Watch how the fishermen unload the fish from the large boats. Buyers around the country come here with their trucks to get fresh fish.
It is usual to see different types of tuna, mackerels, sardines, squids, prawns, cuttlefish, crabs, and lobsters. stingrays and sharks. Shark fin is exported to make a special soup or a stewed dish famous in different parts of China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. You will see some fishermen fishing by the bridge just before the market with fishing rods.
To be on the left side of the market you can find out fish-cutting stoles where the buyers bring huge and small-sized fish to get them cut into pieces and cleaned which makes it easier to transport and cook. Watch how expert they are in cutting the fish with sharp and specially shaped knives. The grounds are cleaned properly daily but visitors will get the common smell of fish and better not to wear the best of your shoes instead you can go there with flip-flops. Tap water is available to wash your feet after the visit.
